Artist Statement

My goal as a photographer is to merge a clear esthetic with a narrative content. While my preferred subject matter is in constant flux, what remains neutral is my desire to make an image that, while visually engaging, also says something about our collective experience. That may mean the work pertains to social issues, politics or simply observations of humanity and the world around me. I tend to seek out nuance, contrast and when fortunate, insight, both visually and contextually when it comes to subject matter.

I am interested in a wide range of subject matter, be it: photojournalism, concert photography, street photography, landscape or travel photography. I look for vantage points that showcase a clash of elements, or for interaction between my lens and the subject. For me it’s less about what my lens is focused on but rather what that subject can tell me and how I can in turn relay that to my viewer. I try to veer away from constructed scenes and prefer to create the majority of my final image in camera as opposed to employing photo manipulation.

In my estimation, some of the strongest examples of this kind of photography are works by Lewis Hein, Malcolm Browne, Ansel Adams and Edward Burtynsky. All of these artists merge a beautifully lit and articulated image with immense meaning, and often encouraged political or moral change via their work. I hope to work in a similar vein for the remainder of my career.
